Graphite coated with coal tar pitch (CTP) derived carbon as anode materials for lithium ion battery were examined to enhance the capacity and rate performace of graphite. Graphite@CTPC composites were prepared by a two-step method, including the homogeneous mixing of components and heat-treatment. Prepared Garphite@CTPC composites were analysed by XRD, FE-SEM and TGA. The electrochemical effects of graphite content were investigated by charge/discharge, cycle, rate performance and impedance tests in the electrolyte of LiPF6 dissolved in mixed organic solvents (EC : DMC = 1 : 1 vol%) and 3 wt% of vinylene carbonate(VC). The lithium ion battery using Graphite@CTPC (Graphite:CTP=5:1 in weight) electrodes had better rate performance (2 C/0.1 C=94.9%) than other composition coin cells.
